Maj. Winters, Rest In Peace.

On January 2nd 2011, Richard D Winters passed away. Who was this man? Major Richard “Dick” Winters was an officer in the 101st airborne. He is well known for his portrayal in HBO’s “Band of Brothers” miniseries.

Major Winters and his men parachuted into occupied France on D-Day, fought in Holland during the failed Market Garden campaign, and froze their collective behinds off in Bastogne. These men volunteered to jump out of airplanes into hostile territory. They knew that no matter where they turned there could be enemies waiting to shoot them.

Take a moment today to reflect on the men who fought and died to liberate the world. I fear we will soon be all out of veterans to thank from WWII and Korea. May we never forget their sacrifices.

We are diminished.

I’m a huge fan of the series, having watched it over and over again. We are, indeed, diminished, but to paraphrase Gen. Patton, let us not despair that he is dead, but rather rejoice in that he lived.
