So this weekend I finished reading Footfall by Larry Niven and, Jerry Pournelle. I really liked it. Heck I liked it so much in Alone I have Marty reading Footfall. BUT the ending is SCREAMING for another chapter. (Hmm this gives me an idea…) There are so many loose ends it feels like the editor just forgot to put the last chapter in the book.
I liked it but I felt there were too many characters to keep track of sometimes. Despite the ending it was one heck of a ride. I do recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Sci-Fi. It really is a hard sci-fi, but it’s not one of those “The technology is the story” type books. The story is the people dealing with the end of THEIR world.
You have people dealing with flooded dams, their loved ones dead. Others are captured by the aliens and have to figure out how to live among them on the “mother ship.” And you have the president and his subordinates struggling to defeat the Snouts and watching the world come crashing down around their ears. And you have the perspective of the Aliens trying to figure out why humans are SO weird.
Really the science just sets the stage but you could know nothing about spinning spaceships, Bussard Ramjets, or kinetic kill weapons and still enjoy the story because it’s about people, not technology.
